1、 Chemical Composition and Standards

Core elements

Chromium (Cr): 18-20%, forms an oxide film to enhance corrosion resistance.

Nickel (Ni): 8-10.5%, stabilizes austenite structure and enhances ductility.

Carbon (C): ≤ 0.08% (conventional type), 304L variant carbon content ≤ 0.03%.

Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2.0%, used for deoxidation and enhancing cold working performance.

Other elements: silicon (Si ≤ 1.0%), phosphorus (P ≤ 0.045%), sulfur (S ≤ 0.03%).

International standards

American standard: ASTM A240/A479 (corresponding to UNS S30400).

European standard: EN 1.4301/X5CrNi18-9.

2、 Performance characteristics

Corrosion resistance

Excellent corrosion resistance to atmospheric, water vapor, and weak acid/alkali media (such as nitric acid with a concentration of ≤ 65%), but susceptible to corrosion by halides (such as chlorides).

Good resistance to intergranular corrosion, which can be optimized through low carbonization (304L) or solid solution treatment.

High temperature performance

High temperature stability, short-term use temperature can reach 800 ℃, long-term use is recommended to be ≤ 400 ℃.

Mechanical properties

Tensile strength: 520-700 MPa (solid solution state).

Yield strength: ≥ 200 MPa (conventional type), the strength is significantly improved after cold processing.

Elongation rate: ≥ 40%, with excellent toughness.

Processing performance

Cold/hot processing: supports processes such as cold rolling, stamping, forging, etc. Cold processing can improve hardness but requires control of deformation.

Weldability: Suitable for TIG welding, it is recommended to use E308/E309 welding materials to avoid intergranular corrosion.

Surface treatment

Common surface states: 2B (cold rolled glossy finish), No.1 (hot rolled acid wash), BA (mirror polished finish).
